Realising Just Cities Workshops

In connection to the Realising Just Cities conference, Mistra Urban Futures arranges seven workshops on 21 September primarily for researchers and practitioners from the five Local Interaction Platforms (LIPs). We want to promote international and inter-LIP collaboration and investigate possible new research projects involving two or several LIPs. Each workshop is designed by the workshop leader, in collaboration with the participants from the LIPs.

The workshop day is split into two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Each participant can sign up for one workshop during the morning session and one during the afternoon session. All workshops in each session are run simultaneously. Please note that you have to register for each session if you would like to attend both in the morning and in the afternoon.

A vegetarian lunch will be served for all who registered and stated that they wanted lunch in the registration form. If you have any special requirements regarding the food, please fill in the appropriate fields in the registration form so that we can meet those needs.

Place: Chalmers University of Technology, Conference Centre, Chalmersplatsen 1, Gothenburg, Sweden

Programme

8:30–9:00 Introduction for all participants
9:00–12:00 Morning workshops

The four morning workshops deal with the ‘Core Processes’ of Mistra Urban Futures. We have identified three sets of cross-cutting Core Processes that are essential for working towards the realisation of just (i.e., fair, green, accessible) cities in different contexts, and on which reflection, comparison, analysis and learning will be conducted: urban change, urban knowledge and urban governance.

A special workshop is also arranged for the PhD students from the LIPs.

9:00–12:00 URBAN KNOWLEDGE

Innovating in the social organisation of different knowledges and practices within cities required to value and harness multiple forms of expertise to support transitions to more just cities.

Workshop leader: Magnus Johansson

Room: Valdemar

URBAN GOVERNANCE

Improving relationships and processes amongst governance stakeholders in order to ensure decision-making and urban management practices that will help achieve just cities.

Workshop leader: Beth Perry

Room: Catella

URBAN CHANGE

Understanding processes of urban transformation which facilitate or constrain cities in becoming more just – the dynamics, drivers, practices and barriers to urban change processes for fair, green and accessible cities.

Workshop leader: Tapio Salonen

Room: Ledningsrummet

PhD WORKSHOP

An opportunity for PhD students to meet other Phd students in the same situation to discuss their respective experiences of working in a collaborative manner during their PhD studies.  There will be an informal dinner gathering for the PhD students at 6 pm.

Workshop leaders: Helena Kraff, Eva Maria Jernsand

Room: Ascom

12:00–13:00 Lunch
13:00–16:00 Afternoon workshops

The three afternoon workshops are about the key substantive areas for research and practice that we have identified, which we call TRACKs – Transformative Research Activities through Co-producing Knowledge. The TRACKs contribute to, and are informed by, the Core Processes; each TRACK can be considered as including and intersecting with processes of change, knowledge production/management and governance. We have identified three TRACKs as priorities, based on LIP activities so far and on convergences for cross-LIP collaboration: socio-ecological, socio-spatial and sociocultural transformations.

There is overlap between the TRACKs, hence they are to be seen as organisational principles rather than discrete or disconnected spheres.

13:00–16:00 SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL TRANSFORMATIONS

‘Socio-ecological transformations’ deals with bi-directional impacts between cities and their social and biophysical environments and with issues of urban ecological sustainability.

Workshop leader: Warren Smit

Room: Valdemar

SOCIO-CULTURAL TRANSFORMATIONS

‘Socio-cultural transformations’ deals with urban life and human development in cities. Of particular interest is the role of cultural diversity, cultural heritage, access to culture and cultural life, and culture-based urban development in fostering more just, vibrant, and integrated cities.

Workshop leader: Rike Sitas

Room: Catella

SOCIO-SPATIAL TRANSFORMATIONS

The workshop on socio-spatial transformations will deal with the relationship of social agency and built urban form, spatial justice and the role of the built environment in realising just cities.

Workshop leaders: Henrietta Palmer

Room: Ledningsrummet
