SEiSMiC

Social innovation, mobilisation and mutual learning in the urban context are the focus of the SEiSMiC project. SEiSMiC, short for Societal Engagement in Science, Mutual learning in Cities, was a platform to discuss and explore paths of integrated urban development.

The project involved 13 partners from 10 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

National networks

SEiSMiC has set up national networks in these 10 European countries focusing on engaging society in urban research. As such, these networks included civil society organizations, media, education establishments, science academies, museums, science centres, research performing or funding organizations, industry/business and policy makers. Bringing these networks together and creating a structured dialogue contributed to building a bridge between the scientific community and society.

Objective

The overall objective was to influence calls and initiatives at EU level and in particular the European Union’s Urban Europe and Joint Programming Initiative. The project also had a direct links to the major Framework Programmes FP7 and Horizon 2020, which are looking for specific ways to have better processes for policy formulation and make better investments with its funds. As the project has a strong connection to local projects another objective is to showcase local and bottom-up initiatives in several European cities to be able to highlight successful projects and processes.
