Transportation and Urban Development
The purpose of this working session is to take the discussion of Urban Railway Station Communities a step further using research and development studies in Sweden, Gothenburg and and Kisumu, Kenya as a starting-point. Some of the tools presented in the Mistra Urban Futures newly published report “Co-creation in urban stations communities” and the article “Tools for co-creative planning processes” as well as in the SymbioCity Approach conceptual framework will be tested in the workshop.
Co-creative methods and tools will be applied in small scale in order to define key issues and future options for the development of urban station communities in a fair, green and accessible way. The urban station community related to the Kisumu station will be used as a case in the workshop in order make the discussion relevant for the African context but at the same time with the ambition to achieve an understanding of common denominators and differences between all Mistra Urban Futures platforms.

Solid waste management
The flow of waste material and the opportunities for improvement form the basis for the project, including management, composting, and energy recovery.

Participatory Cities
How do we create more participatory cities? How can citizens be engaged in decisions about urban development, strategy and policy? What change mechanisms are needed to support more democratic urban governance? Are some of the question this project seeks to answer.

Urban Public Finance
Urban public finance plays a crucial role in urban transformation. In order to be able to effectively intervene in making cities more just, it is essential that we understand urban public finance systems and identify potential levers for change. The first phase of this comparative project examines urban public finance in Cape Town and Kisumu.

Urban food security and value chain
The food value chains are complex systems, not least in countries and places like Kisumu, Kenya. The project will improve the understanding of existing patterns for various food items, and identify opportunities for actions to ensure food security and sustainability.

Migration and Urban Development
The large migration flows and reception of immigrants and asylum seekers form the background of a project with three identified potential research areas: Institutional learning and the role of the public official; Migration in an urban-rural context; the spatial transformation of migration.

Neighborhood transformation and development
Working towards more inclusive urban development requires that low-income residents retain their ‘right to the city’. What does this mean for government, private sector, academic and civil society actors seeking to engage in transformative processes within low-income neighbourhoods? A range of projects are underway or about to launch across the Mistra Urban Futures Local Interaction Platforms which engage with this question from different angles and in partnership with a range of stakeholders.
The first part of the working session under this theme will bring together leaders and participants from these initiatives to share questions, frameworks, methods and progress so far, seeking to identify common themes and potential synergies. The second part of the working session is the first planning meeting for a new collaborative initiative between the platforms in Sheffield-Manchester, Skåne and Gothenburg, focused on international learning exchange on processes of neighbourhood development and transformation in our cities. This is open to other platforms and nodes who may be interested in exploring ways to engage in the comparative process.

Cultural Heritage and urban development
Cultural Heritage and Urban Development considers the role and value of tangible and intangible cultural heritage in realising more just cities which are accessible, green and fair, and that suggest avenues for collaborative research and practice.

18:00-21:00 Closing dinner at the shores of Lake Victoria
The dinner will be at Kiboko Bay at the shores of Lake Victoria on 15th November from 18:00 EAT. Kiboko Bay Resort is adjacent to Dunga fishing village situated on an old quarry on the shores of Lake Victoria. It is 15 minutes’ drive from the city centre. The bay offers breathtaking view of the sun setting experience on the shores of the shimmering waters of Lake Victoria. One cannot afford to miss the excitememt of the chattering of different birds while watching hippos grazing on the shores of the lake. At Kiboko Bay Resort, visitors can watch how traditional fishing is carried out by local fishermen on the lake. The best way to unwind after the extensive and intensive conference days. In addition participants will treated to an interlude of entertainment by African artists.
