8.6 million SEK from the Swedish Research Council Formas

The project Valuation of ecosystem services provided by urban greenery was granted 8.6 million SEK, approximately 950 000 Euro from the Swedish Research Council Formas. This was announced on Monday December 3rd when the grants in Formas annual call for proposals were announced. 150 projects shared in total 6,6 million Euros. The grants are allocated over the period 2012-2015.  

Ecosystem services and urban greenery

Sofia Thorsson, University of Gothenburg is responsible for the project that will study and highlight the value of urban greenery and its ability to provide vital services in the city. Methods that make it possible to efficiently integrate urban greenery into urban planning and risk management will be developed.

Quality of ecosystem services

The project will assess and evaluate the quality of a number of ecosystem services and its development potential. The ecosystems services that will be studied are: biodiversity, noise reduction, air soil and water management, climate regulation, recreation and well-being. Strategies for how greenery can be used to promote sustainable urban development will also be developed. A number of green spaces in Gothenburg, Sweden will be used as case studies.

Project members

The project was developed with Mistra Urban Futures as a platform. The Centre has financially supported the work during the application process and will also contribute with resources during the project. The Swedish Transport Administration, which is an associated partner to Mistra Urban Futures will co-finance the project. Project members come from the University of Gothenburg, the Swedish Geotechnical Institute - SGI, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences - SLU and the University of Gävle.
